Self-Adhesive Magnet roll (1/4" wide)
1.5" Circle Cutter
Sticker Numbers or Stamps
Ink Pads
Day Marker

Cookie Sheet:
Select or purchase the cookie sheet that you would like to use. I found the cheapest cookie sheets at Christmas Tree Shops; however, it may vary according to where you live. You may find some at dollar-type stores; however, in this area I did not find any. I used the back-side of the cookie sheet to do the project and left the sheet un-altered. I have seen some cookie sheet calendars where they spray painted the cookie sheet.

NOTE: If you buy a cookie sheet that has a non-stick coating, you need to scratch that off in order for the adhesive (or spray paint) to stick. If you have a handy-man that has cool tools he can sand it off in a matter of minutes in the garage. If not, good old-fashioned sandpaper and some muscle should do the trick.

Crop-A-Dile & Hanging Ribbon:

Use the Crop-A-Dile to punch two holes for the ribbon to hang the cookie sheet from. I threaded the ribbon from the front of the project to the back through one of the holes and tied a couple knots on the backside that were large enough for the ribbon not to pull through; however, you could also tie a bow.

Patterned Paper & Embellishments:

For this project I used Bo Bunny 'Tis the Season Collection (Carol, Deck the Halls, & Fa La La Paper and the Flowers & Buttons & Bling embellishments). I also found some ribbon that coordinated with the paper.

Obviously, the layout is going to depend on the size and orientation of the cookie sheet. The cookie sheet I used had a usable space that was about 9.75" x 15" so going across . I did some math and some dry-runs to see what would work and found that I had plenty of space to use a 1.5" circle punch for the numbers.

Since the cookie sheet I was using was larger than the cardstock I used two different types of cardstock for the base and covered the edges where they met with ribbon (tucking the ribbon under the paper PRIOR to gluing!). Essentially, I cut the sheet of cardstock to fit the width and length of the cookie sheet then trimmed the corners to match the roundness of the pan. I would recommend Mono Aqua coupled with a few glue dots for the corners and middle for adhering the cardstock to the cookie sheet. Don't forget the adhesive won't stick if you don't scratch off the non-stick coating first.

The numbers were created by cutting patterned paper with a 1.5" circle punch, stamping with the appropriate numbers then inking the edges. I used Mono Aqua to glue them to the paper.

Day Marker:
I used a Technique Tuesday Chipboard shape; however, you could also use Grungeboard or other chipboard shapes or even a slide mount for the day marker. Since I was using chipboard, I sprayed the chipboard square with Green Meadow Glimmer Mist and used a flower and jewel to accent the corner. This is where the magnets come in! Once the chipboard is dry, cut four small pieces of magnet tape to fit on the backside of the day marker. I used a self-adhesive roll of magnet tape about 1/4 inch thick that you can get at Lowes (it was near the picture hanging stuff).

At the very bottom of the page, I cut out the trees from the Bo Bunny Tis the Season Deck the Halls paper and used that as an accent for the bottom of the cookie sheet. I glued that down with Mono Aqua.

I would estimate that the project took 2 - 3 hours to create. It may take longer or shorter depending on how fast you work. They are really cute and there are many possible design scenarios. Titles could be December, Days till Christmas or Christmas Countdown. You could also do the project landscape style instead of portrait style. It is a fun project, so give it a try - just make sure you finish it prior to Christmas!

Cricuit Cartridges....you don't need those anymore!

Are you addicted to your Cricut but hate lugging around all those cartridges?! Cricut is coming out with a new device called the Gypsy that is basically a flash drive that stores your cartridges. Here's the kicker...once you load a cartridge onto the Gypsy the serial number of the Gypsy is "linked" to that Cartridge which means you can't upload it to a different Gypsy. What else does that mean? That means you can't sell that cartridge to anyone who wants to use it on a Gypsy!

So what is a girl (or guy) to do? Check out the Sure Cuts ALot Software. The software allows you to use your Cricut to cut True Type fonts and graphics in .sgv format. You can download thousands of fonts and have them at your fingertips! The software was just updated to version 2.0 in late July and it allows you to "see" where on the mat your item will cut.

Glimmer Mist Kit & Tips

Tips for Using Glimmer Mist:

Prior to using gently shake or swirl to get all the glitter off the bottom
Put something underneath the items you are spraying -an old cookie tray works great!
Works best on porous items such as paper, chipboard or grungeboard
Great for ribbon and paper or fabric flowers
Create custom Canvas Wall Hangings
If you want to stamp an image with water-based ink - stamp it AFTER you glimmer mist the paper. (Not that I know this from experience...but it will make water-based ink run)
Try using the Glimmer Screens to make designs on paper or canvas. They can be used as a positive or negative design. If you want to use the positive then you spray the glimmer mist on the screen and use it as a stamp.

How to Use Glimmer Mist:

If you want a "fine" coating then hold the bottle at least 5 inches away from the object. If you would like a "splotchy" look then keep the bottle close to your object when you spray it. You can also layer the glimmer mist colors to get different affects. The Glimmer Mist will dry fairly quickly on chipboard and paper, but if you need to speed up the process you can use a heat gun to give a little assistance. Once dry the item will have a slight shimmer which just adds a nice little accent to your page.

2-Page Layout Contest Winner

We have a winner! J. Grant submitted the photos above because there were just too many and they were unsure how to fit them all on the page. This layout has 17 photos in it, granted most of them were cropped down to fit, but it shows that you can fit a LOT of photos on one layout!

The trip was so long ago that they didn't want any journaling, but you could always work in some hidden journaling behind one of the photos.

Basics for the Beginner Scrapbooker

Beginner scrapbookers don't need to feel intimidated by all the products and tools out there. If you are a beginner scrapbooker you can start scrapbooking with some simple tools and supplies.

Adhesive (typically under $7 each):

There are two basic types of adhesive - wet and dry. The dry adhesive is great for adhering photos to cardstock and cardstock to cardstock. My favorite dry adhesive is 3L's EZ Runner Adhesive because it is easy to use, you don't have to worry about refilling and it doesn't get caught up in itself - plus 3L donates money to charities such as Make-A-Wish and Breast Cancer Research. For a little stronger dry adhesive there are Glue Dots that come in a variety of sizes and thicknesses. For wet adhesive, I prefer Mono Aqua. This adhesive is great for when you need to glue items together but need a little "wiggle" room before the glue sets. For example, if you are gluing letters that have a background and you might need to wiggle them into place before the glue sets.

Trimmer and Scissors ($10 - 25 each):

A good pair of scissors and a trimmer are a neccessity. Trimmers come in two basic styles - guillotine and rotary. The guillotine trimmers are ones that have a blade on the handles that chomps down on the paper to cut it and rotary trimmers have the blade tucked away in a cover. Personally, I feel the guillotine trimmers are dangerous because you could chomp your finger off and noboby wants that! So, I would recommend a rotary trimmer such as Tonic's 12" Portable Rotarty Trimmer. It is lightweight, the arm comes out so you can still measure and cut 12 inch pages and it gives a clean cut. For scissors, you need a pair of sharp scissors like EK Success's Color Bee Titanium Craft Scissors. These little guys are sharp - right down to the tip, which helps you get into tight spaces.

Page Kits (typically under $20 each):

I think the hardest part of starting to scrapbook is trying to match up patterned paper, cardstock and embellishments. That is why page kits are great because they typically have patterned paper with matching cardstock and embellishments already together. All you have to do is pick out a kit that you like or that matches your theme or colors of what you are trying to scrap.

Journaling Pens (under $3 each):
Not everyone is a fan of journaling; however, the whole point of scrapbooking is to preserve your memories - journaling definitely helps! I would recommend a journaling pen, such as ZIG's Dual Tip Memory Writer or Tombow's ABT markers.

Album ($12 to $30 each):
Lastly, you need an album to safely store all your beautiful layouts. Albums come in all different sizes, shapes and materials. Please contact me if you are in the market for a scrapbook album. because I have access to thousands of styles and can show you several styles to choose from.

Vinyl Letters Use 101 - Create a Custom Vanity Plate

It only took me 9 months, but I finally figured out what to put on my front license plate. In Delaware we don't have front State License Plates, but I purchased my car out of state, so it came with a front plate holder. I was going to take it off altogether, but it was attached to the bumper so I would have been left with holes in my front bumper. So, I had this dilemma of what to use as my front plate.

Then it hit me! I can get vinyl letters cut to say whatever I want! I went to Pep Boys, our local automotive store, and purchased a plain black license plate then contacted Midnight Oil Scrapbook Design to have the letters cut.

So simple....why didn't I think of that 9 months ago?!

Fear Not the Patterned Paper

Are you afraid of patterned paper? Do you look at it and wonder how the heck you are going to match it up, let alone try to add other patterns to the mix?! Well, fear no more. Below are some tips for using patterned paper.

Tips for Choosing & Coordinating Patterned Papers

Select papers from the same range of the Manufacturer (i.e. Basic Grey has Collections where all the papers match)

This ensures your papers will match. You may not like some of the combinations together…but they would match!
Try to mix it up – don’t put all of one design type together – mix it up by using one, two or three different designs

Use your Eyeball

Mix and match your patterns to please your eye. Not everyone has the same taste, but you will know what patterns you like together.

Color Schemes

You can choose patterns that have colors in the same color family OR
You can choose patterns that have colors that complement each other (i.e. ones across from each other on the color wheel)

Use as embellishments - cut out individual elements of a patterned paper to use on your layout or use Sizzix or Cricut to create your own embellishments
Use strips of patterned paper as a background for a photo or create a basket weave pattern
Mat your photos on Patterned Paper
Patchwork – great use of scraps
Use both sides of double-sided paper by creating flowers or folding the paper so you can see both sides.

Personalize your Space with Sick Ons!

Stick On Monograms by Midnight Oil Scrapbook Design (MOSD) are great for personalizing your walls. These are like rub-ons but better because you can alter them to make them match whatever project you are working on. You can use alcohol ink, solvent ink or paint to make them whatever color and design you want. In this example, I created the phrase "Scrap Zone" with the Monograms. I used Eggplant, Lettuce and Butterscotch Alcohol Ink by Tim Holtz. Then I outlined the outer circle with Stickles. In hindsight, I would recommend applying the Stickles after you have adhered your project because it interferred with the transfer sheet. After you are done altering the Stick Ons, let them dry then use the Transfer tape that is on the back of each letter. Essentially, it works like a rub-on....you place the transfer tape over your Stick On, rub it then peel it off with your Stick On attached. Next you place the transfer tape and Stick On onto your project, rub it and peel off the transfer tape - leaving behind the Stick On. Easy!

Heidi Swapp Invisibles

Heidi Swapp Invisibles allow you to make a truly unique page! Each sheet of cardstock has a pattern on it with a resist material that allows you to use ink, chalk or glimmer mist to create your own special pattern. The areas without the resist material accept the color, but the resist areas do not accept the color and the pattern comes through.

Tips for Using the Mask

De-stick it a little by dabbing on your clothes to remove some of the sticky.
Layer with the positive and negative shapes
Lay the mask sheet face down on the work surface then lay the Invisible face down on top of it – it is much easier to get the shapes straight if you do it this way rather than juggling with a floppy, sticky piece of plastic! Turn over and smooth the mask in place.
Use a blending pad to apply ink or chalk
Clean the mask after use so the next time you use it the previous color doesn’t come off onto your new project.
Use scrap paper if you are near the edge of the page – that way you can keep on inking without worrying about getting it on the table.

Acrylic paints (go easy so the paper doesn’t get too wet!)

Glimmer mists
Inks

Care of the Mask

Always store the mask on its backing sheet when not in use, and take care to clean off any ink after use. If it loses its “stick” after a few uses, wash it gently in warm soapy water and allow it to air dry and it will be as good as new again, a spray removable adhesive could also be used.

Create your own masks!

You can create your own masks with almost anything - die cuts or chipboard comes to mind. They are a great way to make your own masks without spending a lot of money. Just remember to use repositionable tape!!

Tips on Taking Portraits

Scrapbookers use photographs alot, so you want to have photographs that really tell a story and will enhance your scrapbook page. Trying to find new angles or changing your perspective is something that I have talked about before but I recently came across this blog post by Darren Rowse of Digitial Photography School. Acrylic Dogbone Album

Acrylic albums are clearly a lot of fun! The clear pages give you lots of options because you can completely cover them with paper or you can use them clear so that you can see-thru to the next page. In this album, I did a little of both! I'll walk you through the steps I took to create this acrylic dogbone album.

First up...ink the edges. Alcohol ink works great on acrylic and you can mix the colors to get just the right effect. I inked the edges of all five pages of the album even though I was covering some of the pages with cardstock. You can use the inked edges to "hide" gluedots and when the paper doesn't line up perfectly....not that that ever happens to me! ;).

Now, there is a little planning involved in what you want to do next - all covered, all clear or mix-n-match. I decided to do every other page covered, so the cover, 3rd and last pages were covered with cardstock. Double-sided cardstock works great on this type of project because you can see both sides. Lay the shaped album on the cardstock and trace around it, then use scissors to cut a little to the inside of the line. Once you have the first cut, line up the cardstock with the album page and make some adjustment cuts as needed! Believe me you never get it right the first time and there are always some minor cuts that need to be done. Next, adhere the cardstock with small glue dots along the edge of the shape, which will be hidden by the inked edge.

When you do clear pages you need to plan ahead a little because you can see through to the pages behind them. For one of the pages that I left clear, I cut out two photo mats the same size and glued them on back to back. Then on the page behind the clear page I used the same size photo mat so when the clear page is on top, you can't see the photomat of the page behind it. Clear as mud right?! Hopefully this example below will make it a little clearer.

The other option for clear pages are to have something from the page behind "peek" out when the clear page is on top. See the example below where I used a rectangle sized photomat on the clear page and three square photomats on the cardstock page so two parts of the squares show through.

The last step is to add some embellishments and use various ribbons and fibers to help hide the metal ring that keeps the book together. Tada....You're done!

Flocking

Ever want to try using flock? Have you ever heard of flocking? Flock is a fun, fluffy and fuzzy fiber that you can adhere to projects to enhance an image or a pattern on patterned paper. It can even be mixed with glitter to give it a little sparkle.

To use flock you can use a strong high-tack glue such as Aleene's Paper Glaze. Apply the glue either free-hand or by going over a stamped image or pattern. Next, place the flocking on it, apply if with a heavy hand because you shake off the excess and save it for another project. Gently pat the flocking to ensure it really gets into the glue then let it dry. After at least 15 minutes, shake off the excess flock and re-store for later. This will leave you with a flocked image.

You can also use Terrifically Tacky Tape to make a flocked straight line. Cut the length of tape that you would like and tap it into a pile of flock to cover the exposed sticky side of the tape. Next, remove the red covering that protects the other side of the tape and adhere it to your project.

Some examples of things you can flock:

a stamped image such as a duck, chick, or sheep
letters (stamped or cut-outs)
double-sided tape to make a straight edge (alternative to using ribbon)
directly on patterned paper to enhance the paper
brads
stickers

Even More Cool Ways to Use Stickles

I had posted about ways to use Stickles in a previous post and found that the link to the video no longer works, so I thought I would do an updated post on all the different ways you can use Stickles.

Stickles is a glitter glue that is manufactured by Ranger and come in tons of different colors. It has a fine tip so you can actually write with it, do fine-detailing, or you can really spread it around to cover a larger area. Stickles are the best scrapbook investment because for under $2 you can get a 0.5 ounce bottle that will last for many, many projects. Stickles is also acid-free and non-toxic so it is safe to use in your scrapbooks.

Some of the my favorite ways to use Stickles are listed below:

Stamp a word then Stickles over it
Use it for the center of a flower instead of a brad
Accentuate part of a pattern on your patterned paper (i.e. if the paper has flowers you could outline some with Stickles)
Lightly apply Stickles to your fabric flowers to make them sparkle
Apply Stickles to your ribbon
Use Stickles as a glue to glue down a transparent item like Heidi Swapp Ghost Shapes or Tim Holtz Fragments
Use it to give a little bling to embellishments (i.e. add a little Stickles to a stamped image or sticker to make one little piece "pop")
Write names on Christmas Stockings!
Add some Bling to Cricut cutouts

Tips on Working with Stickles:
Clogged tip - use a needle and push it down the opening to clear out the clog
If you are HEAVY on the stickles and you put a TON on a page - let it dry for several hours, maybe even overnight! You can use a heat gun if you are in a rush.
Not sure which color to get - start with a clear one like Icicle or Diamond, these colors will just add sparkle to whatever you are using it with and the color will show through it. Then you can go crazy with all the other colors available!

How to use Lace Cardstock & Intracacies

Lace Cardstock or Intracacies are essentially a sheet of cardstock that has been cut out to leave behind an intracate, interlocking design. There are so many possibilities for designs that it is almost endless. Midnight Oil Scrapbook Design has designs like dog paws, princess crowns, school bus, baseball, football, pirates, butterflies, Mickey Mouse heads, and so much more!

Here are some examples of ways you can use lace cardstock or Intracacies on a layout:

Background - You can use the Intracacies as a background by gluing it to a sheet of cardstock and creating your layout on top of the design.
Cut it Apart - Cut out sections of the design to use on your pages. Depending on the design, this might take a little skill making it look even.
Make it a Mask - You can place the cutout design on a sheet of cardstock and ink, chalk, or glimmer mist over it. Carefully, lift off the Intracacies and the design will be left behind on your cardstock.
Alter it - You can also use ink, chalk or glimmer mist to change the color of the Intracacies so that it matches your layout. Depending on the design, you may be able to accent a part of the Intracacies by backing a section of it with cardstock. In one of the layouts below, I used some pink cardstock behind one of the white flower Lace Paper to highlight that flower. On MOSD's School Theme Intracacies I think it would be neat to cut out little pictures of the kids and put them in the windows of the school bus.
Make it a Frame - Use the Intracacies to "frame" your photo. Cut out a portion of the Intracacy so your photo can show through it.

Some Examples:

Birthday cards - I colored the white Flower Lace Cardstock with Glimmer Mist - Pink Ink and cut out the design.

Scrapaholix Page Kit - Same white Flower Lace Cardstock as above, but I didn't color it. I cut out sections and in the top left corner, I accented one flower with pink cardstock. Some of the flowers were placed ontop of the photos...for a change of pace!

Home Decor or Gift Idea - Canvas

Want to add some personalization to your boring photos hanging on the wall? Need a quick gift idea? Here is a great little project for you:

What you need:
Canvas
Ribbon of your choice
Glimmer Mist
Glimmer Screens
Embellishments (Chipboard, Flowers, etc.)
Bazzill Cardstock
Adhesive (Terrifically Tacky Tape and Glue Dots)

How to Make it:

In the example above I used a 6x6 Canvas as the base. Each package has two canvases in it with screw eyes/hooks that allow you to connect the canvases together if you want. You could also use the hook screw to attach the ribbon to for creating a location to hang the finished project.
Step 1 - Protect your work surface. A kitchen trash bag works great.
Step 2 - Place the Glimmer Screen on your canvas and begin to spritz the glimmer mist on the canvas. Make sure you also hit the sides of the canvas and be sure you are careful not to get the glimmer mist where you don't want it. In this example, I was using the glimmer screens in opposing corners so I was careful not to spray the glimmer mist near the opposite corner. In this example I used Vanilla Breeze, Coffee Shop and Meadow Green Glimmer Mist and the Decorative Corners Glimmer Screen. You can also blot up any big beads of glimmer mist with a paper towel by gently blotting.
Step 3 - Carefully remove the Glimmer Screen from the canvas. I find that if you use one finger to hold it down and pick it up with your other hand that it won't smear as you remove it. Clean off the Glimmer Screen with a paper towel and place the glimmer screen on the opposite corner and repeat Step 2.
Step 4 - Either let dry naturally or you can hit it with a heat gun to speed up the drying time.
Step 5 - Glimmer mist your chipboard element. In this example I used a key. Try mixing and blending the glimmer mist.
Step 6 - Cut the length of ribbon you would like to use as a hanger. I basically just eye-ball it to see about how long you want it to hang. Then attach it to the back of the canvas using the double-sided Terrifically Tacky Tape. I put the Terrifically Tacky Tape on the wooden frame and wrap it down the side towards the canvas - see photo below.

Step 7 - Mat your photos and attach photos and embellishments with Glue Dots.

Here are some other examples of wall hangings that I made. These were made using Cat's Eye Fluid Chalk to ink the edges and embellished with Bazzill and patterned paper.

I would consider myself an amateur photographer. I have taken some classes and used to be a member of the local photography club. Lately, I haven't had much time to just go out and shoot...but I saw this blog post about making your photographs tell a story. What a great and simple idea!! Have every photo have a beginning, middle and end. What a difference it makes in the photo too...I really did want to walk down the steps and ride the waverunner....or maybe just sit on the beach! :)

Fiskar's Fingertip Craft Knife

This month's Scrapaholix USA kit technique is the Fiskar's Fingertip Craft Knife. Now anyone who knows me knows that I tend to cut myself with sharp objects often! Luckily this little guy fits on you finger so it's impossible to cut the finger that it is on....you just have to remember to keep your other fingers out of the way. It took me a little while to get used to it, but once I cut out a flower or two it was fairly easy. The knife hooks onto your finger and you hold it as if you were holding a pen or pencil, so it makes it easier to move. You can actually cut out pretty ornate things with the knife. I cut out the two flower embellishments in the layout example below.

Low-cost Scrapbooking Options - Monochromatic Layout

Not every layout needs to cost an arm and a leg! You can make a low-cost monochromatic layout for anywhere from $2 to $4 - all you need is a few sheets of cardstock. I always use Bazzill Cardstock because they have textured and smooth cardstock and they all come in a wide variety of colors with varying shades. Select a color that complements your photos and pick out three or four shades of that color. The total amount of cardstock you need will ultimately depend on the final design but in the example below I probably only used four to six sheets of cardstock.

Monochromatic color schemes are not only easy to make, but they are pleasing to the eye! Typically it is best to select one of the colors to be the main color and then use the remaining shades to coordinate. Try layering the carstock from darkest to lightest or lightest to darkest. You can also use shapes in varying shades as I did in the example below. I cut out squares of the various shades of purple and placed them from darkest to lightest across the bottom of the layout.

Want to add a little "pop" of another color? Try using a color wheel, to select an analogous color or a complementary color. Analogous colors are colors that are located next to each other on the color wheel and give a bright, cheery look. Complementary colors are colors that are located opposite each other on the color wheel and will give a more vibrant look to your layout. In the example below, yellow is a complementary color to purple and you can see how the yellow m&m "pops" off the page!

Rules of Scrapbooking

Are you a beginner? Was your New Year's Resolution to learn how to Scrapbook? Well, I will go over the Rules of Scrapbooking for you!

Rule#1 - Use Acid-Free and Lignin-Free products - Most scrapbooking supplies will state whether they are acid-free and lignin-free and you should look for products free of acid and lignin. The presence of acid and lignin (a chemical compound that is most likely found in wood) will damage your photographs over time. This is why newspaper clippings turn yellow over time.
How to Break Rule #1 - If something isn't acid-free or lignin-free you need to isolate it from the items on your page. For example, if you ABSOLUTELY HAVE to use the first leaf of Fall (i.e. lignin) in your scrapbook page you can laminate it (if it isn't too dried out) or you could scan it or take a photo and print "the leaf". For newspaper clippings, if you want to use the actual newspaper clipping instead of a copy, you can use Krylon's Make it Acid-Free Spray to make it safe for your scrapbook. Likewise, Tim Holtz's Grungeboard is not acid-free so it needs to be
isolated or coated with something acid-free like ink, acrylic paint, glimmer mist, ect.

Rule #2 - Page Titles - Generally speaking scrapbook pages have a page title. You can think of it as the Headline of a Newspaper - it should grab your attention and give you a teaser about what you are scrapping. Some examples for a New Year's Layout would be "Ringing in 2009", "Partying till it's 2009!" or "Waiting for the Ball to Drop".

Rule #3 - Journaling - Some people think of journaling as a four letter word; however, journaling doesn't need to be a dreaded task. Scrapbooks are a way to preserve memories and without the four W's (Who, What, When & Where) it makes it easy to forget what was going on at the time. There are lots of excuses (I don't like my handwriting, there isn't any room left on the page, and on and on), but there are also lots of solutions. If you don't like your handwriting, try doing it on the computer or writing a little note and hide it behind a photo (hidden journaling). If you absolutely hate to journal try incorporating little bits of info into the layout. You can put the date on an embellishment or write the people's names beneath their photos. Sometimes the title says it all, so you don't really need to journal.

Rule #4 - Rules are meant to be BROKEN! - Remember, this is YOUR scrapbook, your memories and your life. You don't need to go crazy learning every technique under the sun or make pages exactly like the "scrapbook celebrities", just scrap your photos and get your memories preserved. Don't be afraid to try scrapbooking because your layouts won't look like everyone else's - they aren't supposed to!

Holiday Photo Tips

It is that time of the year again....photo opportunities abound, families are together and kids are on their best behavior (yeah right!). Listed below are some tips for taking better holiday photos for your scrapbooks.

The Rule of Thirds: Imagine a grid placed on your photo, such as this one below:

According to the Rule of Thirds you would try to place your subject at ONE of the intersecting points shown with a red cross. This creates a well balanced picture that allows the eye to "flow" across the picture.

Backgrounds: Try to keep them uncluttered and plain so they do not distract from the subject.

Try different angles: If you have kids or pets.....get down on their level to take the picture. Try getting the family together then take the picture from a higher position (maybe from the stairs) or vice versa-have them on the stairs.

Candid shots: Take candid shots. You have to be sneaky...but you can get some really good photos when people don't realize you are taking a picture!

Natural Light: Whenever possible use natural light, but not harsh direct light. Some examples of good natural light are diffused light that exists on hazy or cloudy days and indirect light from a window.

Recession-Proof Scrapbooking

OK...it is all over the news...the dreaded R word - Recession! Don't let the recession get you down. There are ways to cut-costs and STILL Scrapbook! Listed below are some ways to make your scrapbooking dollar s-t-r-e-t-c-h to it's fullest capacity.

Chipboard letters or embellishments - Do they have a pattern you don't like or already used a few times - alter them so they are good as new. Paint them with acrylic paint, cover them with patterned paper or cardstock, or ink them so they look different. You can also use different types of chipboard letters (they don't REALLY need to match - do they?) to create a "mixed" alphabet.
Brads - Not the right color? Try alcohol ink to change their color to match what you need!
Scraps - Don't throw the scraps out! You can use them to make cards!
Cardstock-only Layout - Have you ever made a cardstock-only layout? If you are a stamper, you can use stamps to create your titles and embellishment. Not a stamper? Try using different layers of cardstock to create interesting geometric designs.

Ever get tired of the same 'ol picture....Jane and Jack by the tree, Jane and Jack at the table, Jane and Jack smiling pretty. I think you get the gist. Well, try shaking it up a bit. Take photos from different angles and levels. Try taking some photos from either up high or down low. For example, take a family photo where the person taking the picture is up several steps so the photo is taken looking down on everyone looking up at the camera. Or, get down low to take photos of kids and pets. Try taking a picture in a mirror or reflection in a window - that can be tricky! :)

I recently bought a point and shoot camera that can go underwater. Let me tell you how much fun I had taking pictures in the pool on vacation! It is actually harder than it seems because it is hard to "see" what you are taking a picture of. I think Kodak makes some disposable underwater cameras...you should give it a try on your next vacation or getaway! So here are some examples of my underwater and "different" angle photos.

Here is my favorite picture! That's my dog Griffin, he is a Great Dane whose ears were never cropped. I always wanted to get a picture of those floppy ears!

So...don't be afraid to try some new angles. Get out there and start taking some photos!

Christmas Card - Stampendous Jumbo Ornament

It is not to early to start making some home-made Christmas Cards!

I decided to try something a little different for Christmas cards this year.....a different size....different colors. This card is 6x6 and made with Bazzill cardstock and Stampendous Stamps. The colors aren't exactly "traditional", but I like em'.

How to do it:
Cut a 12x12 sheet of Bazzill Serenade in half then fold in half with the textured sides to the outside.
Cut a 5"x5" square of Bazzill Sprout 12x12 Cardstock
Cut a 4.75"x 4.75" of Bazzill Smoothies Coconut Swirl
Cut small length of white ribbon (a couple inches should do it)
Stamp the swirls (Stampendous Jumbo Ornament Set) on the 6x6 Bazzill Serenade cardstock (I used Ranger's Adirondack Ink Pad in Cool Peri.
Stamp the branches from the Jumbo Ornament set using green ink (I used Adirondack Dye Ink Pad - Lettuce). I stamped three branches in the top left corner of the coconut swirl cardstock.
Stamp the Jumbo Ornament in Black.
I used I'Kandee Chalk Earth Tones to color in the ornament.
Stamp the Merry Christmas from Stampendous Merry Messages stamp set in red (Adirondack Dye Ink pad in Cranberry)
Tie the white ribbon in a knot and adhere with a strong adhesive such as Mono Aqua or Glue Dots.
If you want to add a little "sparkle" you can use Stickles Icicle or Diamond color to line the ornament and dot the i in Merry Christmas. [note: Stickles takes a while to dry! You may want to let it sit for several hours before trying to handle it.]

Putting it all together.
Adhere the coconut swirl to the Bazzill Sprout square
Adhere the Bazzill Sprout square to the Bazzill Serenade Card.
I used Mono Aqua adhesive - because you can slide it around a little after you glue it down. Just in case you aren't "perfect" when you first put it down.

Sure Cuts A Lot Software from Craft Edge works with your Cricut Personal or Expression cutter to allow you to cut using the True Type fonts installed on your computer or from one of the thousands of fonts downloaded for FREE! You can also use it to cut dingbats and SVG files or Scalable Vector Graphics . Sure Cuts A Lot also allows you to weld words or change the style of the font to shadow, blackout, shadow blackout or mixed. It works with your Cricut machine as long as it has a cartridge in it. Additionally, the interface looks like your cutting pad, so you can move items on the interface to where they would be on your cutting mat and it is what you see is what you cut! Best of all, this software works on Windows and MAC! They have a free trial version if you want to give it a "test drive!" You may need to update your firmware on your Cricut, but I found that was easy to do.

Long Term Photo Care - Home vs Commercial Printing

Home Printing vs. Commercial Printing - What is right for you?

At the time of this writing, you can get comercial 4x6 prints for as low as 8 cents per print. A brief overview of the top three companies is provided below:

Winkflash has a deal going where you can get 50 free 4x6 prints if you try them out and their shipping is as low at 89 cents. 4x6 photos are 8 cents per print and they have a wide variety of print size options that go from wallet up to 10x15.

Shutterfly has a deal where you can get 50 free 4x6 prints plus a 11x14 collage poster. 4x6 prints cost 15 cents per print and they have several print size options, although not as many as Winkflash, they do offer print sizes up to 20x30. Shipping costs start at $1.79 for 4x6 photos.

Snapfish offers new customers 20 prints free. 4x6 photos cost 9 cents per photo; however, they have the most limited options with only 4x6, 5x7 and 8x10. Their shipping is a little strange because it looks like you pay per bundle of 10 prints starting at 49 cents per bundle.

All three companies offer some form of editing and cropping.

For Home Printing you need a good quality photo inkjet printer and some photo editing software. You can get a nice photo inkjet for around $100 and photo editing software such as Photoshop Elements for about $100. Then there is the cost of the photo paper. As an example, I have an Epson R800 and the Premium Epson 4x6 glossy photo paper runs about 40 cents a sheet. Now, you may say "Oh, I use the office store brand because it is cheaper." However, you should be aware that the manufacturers "engineer" their inks and papers to work the best when used together. My Epson photos printed with Epson ink on Epson Premium Photo paper will last over 100 years. However, certain ink and paper cominations may not last 4 months! I would recommend you check out the Wilhelm Imaging Research's website for more info on photo longevity. They have researched several printer, ink and paper combinations for print longevity. Very interesting research!

Back to the commercial printers, only one of the top three sites had any discussion on print longevity that I could find with any ease. Winkflash indicated that their photos would last "several decades before any noticeable fading occurs..."

So, although the commercial printers may cost 8 cents a print make sure you do your research and are comfortable with the longevity of the photos. I personally like to print my own photos - could it be that I am a control freak...maybe. I like to crop them pick what sizes I want them to print out and get them immediately! :) However, if you are printing tons of photos or you don't have the proper equipment to print them at home then commercial printers are a great way to go. Just make sure you use a company that can provide the best print longevity. If they don't say on their website....then e-mail them and ask! You want to make sure your precious memories will last a lifetime and beyond!

So, in summary commercial printing can be much cheaper than home printing, especially if you are printing 100's of photos. If you are an impatient control freak....print 'em yourself! No matter what you choose - make sure you know how long those photos will last and take care of them.

Cool Ways to use Stickles

What's a Stickles you ask?! Well, it is the best little glitter glue combo on the market. Stickles are made by Ranger and they come in 0.5 oz squeeze bottles with a small tip that is great for writing. They are acid-free, non-toxic, and perfect for adding some "sparkle" to your scrapbook pages!

Some Tips and Hints for Stickles are:

Use Stickles over a stamped word to make it Sparkle
Do not use Stickles over water-based markers - it will make the marker run
Stickles takes a long time to dry - so let it sit for a couple hours or overnight (depending on how thick you put it on!)

2nd Annual Sweet Memories Crop

The scrapbook crop details have been finalized! This crop will be an all-day (12-hour) crop that starts at 9AM and ends at 9PM. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Team Mary's Angel's. As a member of Team Mary's Angel's I will be participating in the Relay for Life in Oxford, PA on May 16 & 17 2008 at the Oxford Stadium.

Acrylic Albums - so clear - so fun!

What can you do with Acrylic Albums or embellishments? I think the question should probably be what can't you do! Acrylic is clear so it tends to scare people, but you really shouldn't be afraid. You can alter it in so many ways that it is hard to list them all....but I will try:

Top Ten Ways to Alter Acrylic:

Alcohol Ink - Pick one, two, three or however many colors you like and dab the alcohol ink directly onto the acrylic. It dries pretty quickly so you can go over it again to darken or color to your liking.
Acrylic Paint - Use a paint brush or a stamp to apply the acrylic paint. Make sure you let it thoroughly dry before you do anything else.
Paper - Cover it with cardstock or patterned paper.
Fiber & Ribbon- Attach ribbon or fiber by either punching a hole in the acrylic with the Crop-A-Dile or adhere the ribbon with Terrifically Tacky Tape, but make sure you hide the tape!
Rub-ons - Use rub-ons to add words or accents.
Stamp It - Stamp it with acrylic paint or Staz On ink.
Buttons - Adhere buttons with glue dots - make sure to camouflage the backside of the glue dot!
Glitter - Make it sparkle with Stickles or other types of glitter.
Sand It - Scuff it up with sand paper.
Let it be! - Leave it clear - au natural!

Long Term Photo Care: Image Backup & Protection

Part 2: Image Backup & Protection

Let's face it....we don't think about long-term protection of our photos and/or digital files as often as we should. The fact of the matter is that "stuff" happens and we should be thinking about protecting our photos, slides, movies, and digital files. There are several methods of completing this task depending on what format your photos are currently in.

Protection for printed photos: To protect printed photos you could print doubles and put them in a safe place, which ideally should not be your house or wherever you have your original set. You may consider putting them in the bank safe deposit box or give them to a sibling or friend to hold at their house. Please remember that photos must be kept in a cool, dry location away from sunlight so basements, garages and attics are NOT the best location. Another option would be getting the photos as digital files. Most photo developers offer the option of getting the photos also put onto a CD or you could have them scanned in at a later date. These options would also work well for slides and old movies too. There are companies that specialize in converting slides and old movies into digital formats.

Protection for Digital Files: Protecting digital files involve backing up your files in some format. Repeat after me..."backing up your files"! If you only have your digital photos on your camera card - transfer them to your hard drive. You can set up file folders to store the photos in whatever way makes the most sense to you, whether it is by date, event or some other method of filing. Camera cards are NOT considered safe for long-term storage. Once the files are on your computer there are several options to backup your hard drive - copy to CD or DVD, copy to an external hard drive or use a third-party off-site online data management company.

CD or DVD - Vary from about 5 to 17 mega bytes (MB) of storage depending on whether they are single or double-layered. They also come in a format that allows you to re-write on them. HINT: always handle the CD or DVD by the hole in the middle and the edges because you don't want to get greasy fingerprints on the media. ALSO - do NOT use permanent marker such as a Sharpie because the solvents in the ink will eat through the label! CDs and DVDs are best stored upright.

External Hard drives - These are super easy to use. Typically they plug right into your USB port and you can copy files right to it. External drives typically range from 120 to 750 GB of storage with pricing ranging from under $70 to over $200.

Online Data Storage - There are several companies that will store your data on their servers for a monthly or yearly fee. Your files get uploaded on a regular basis and stored on secure servers. You typically want to look for a company that uses an encryption code and has at least 128-bit SSL encryption during transmission. Services like this offer the benefit of convenient off-site storage. Prices vary from as low as $50 a year to over $200 a year for 10GB of storage.

So, start your new year off right and plan to BACKUP your data!!!!

Easy Gift - Small Handmade Desk Calendar

One 3.5" x 5" acrylic photo frame (Michaels, AC Moore or similar will carry them)
Three sheets of white 8.5" x 11" cardstock
Excel Calendar Template (send me an e-mail and I will send it to you)
Rubber Stamps (check out the Stampendous Holiday Chick Set)
Markers
Ink Pads
Small Clear Bag
Ribbon

Instructions:

Print out the three pages of the calendar on the white 8.5" x 11" cardstock
Cut out each month - there are gray lines that guide you to the correct size
Stamp, doodle, color and/or decorate each month
Insert January 2008 in the acrylic photo holder
Place the Acrylic photo holder with January and the remaining months in a small clear bag and tie off with a piece of ribbon

Campaign for REAL Scrapping

Let's face it. Some scrapbookers get carried away in trying to make the perfect page and they can't see the forest for the trees! The whole purpose of scrapbooking is to create a keepsake that documents your family history. The good and the bad! Although many may not like to journal, (me included!), it is very important to document everything - Who, What, When, Where and Why! You may look back at your Holiday pictures a couple years from now and not remember how excited your kid was when they found that Santa had eaten the cookies and left them their first bike!

So, don't worry about trying to get your layouts like the ones in the magazines. Just go with the flow, do what you like and get your photos and stories documented!

Long Term Photo Care - Part 1

Part 1 - Digital Image Management

How do you store your digital photos? On the camera card? On CD? On your hard drive? Scattered around different cameras, computers and iPods?

There is no time like the present to get your digitial images organized! There are several different options available but the easiest is storing them in file folders on your hard drive. Now how you store them and organize them is up to you. Some people like to organize by years or dates and others like to store them based on events. You can also mix it up - an example would be to have a Christmas Folder with subfolders for each year. If you don't know how to make folders, just shoot me an e-mail and we can walk through it.

Each digital image has EXIF data associated with it. EXIF stands for Exchangeable Image File and it stores information such as the date, time and exposure settings for each picture. Some computer programs will also allow you to store tags or keywords on the EXIF file so you can search for and find your photos faster. There are several programs on the market today, such as Adobe Photoshop or Corel PaintShop Pro that will allow the user to edit their photos as well as tag and store them so they are easy to find. Adobe Photoshop will allow you to put tags on your photos so you could have tags for Mom, Dad and Brother. But, if you wanted to find the photos with just Mom and Dad you could search for pictures that had both of them in them. How great is that?!

Another option would be the online storage sites such as WinkFlash, Kodak or Shutterfly. These sites typically allow the user to create albums that can be shared online with family and friends.

So, however you decide to organize your photos. Get them organized because next month we will discuss backing them up! Yes...it needs to be done! :)
